About this postcard
Mrs. Q. P. Stanning writes from Spring Valley, New York, to R. P. Fuller in Vineland, New Jersey, about a $2.14 bill for 1883 taxes on her plots in Vineland, forwarded to her on February 14, 1884. She asks whether the lots were assessed in 1884 and wants to know if anything is still owed. The surname also appears in the record as Hanning, probably a misreading of the hand. Vineland was laid out in the 1860s as a planned agricultural colony and sold in small parcels to buyers who often lived far from their land, which made tax questions by mail routine. A one-cent government postal card was the cheapest way to send one.
