About this postcard

An architectural rendering shows the proposed design for the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception: a long brick and stone church with a tall, slender campanile at the left, a round rose window, and a large green dome over the crossing, set on a broad terraced plaza with lawns and trees. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, dedicated to the patroness of the United States, was begun in 1920; its crypt church opened in 1926 while the upper church was completed only in 1959, so this card records an early, unexecuted or intermediate scheme for the building.
