About this postcard
A long, high-ceilinged public lobby of The Peoples National Bank in Lynchburg, Virginia, shown in one-point perspective. A red carpeted aisle runs between white marble counters and brass-trimmed teller cages under a coffered ceiling and chandelier; tall windows with red drapery and a small table with potted palms close the far end. The printed caption gives the bank's capital and surplus as one million dollars, a common way for a regional bank of the period to advertise soundness. Lynchburg, on the James River in central Virginia, was then a tobacco and shoe manufacturing city, and its downtown banks built grand classical interiors in the early 20th century.
