About this postcard
Punch Bowl Spring sits in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, a hot spring with a raised rim of yellow, orange, and rust mineral deposits. The pool steams and churns constantly but does not erupt, and its water is very hot. A stand of slender lodgepole pines rises behind the pale sinter flat, with a pink-tinged sky above. The spring is a good example of the built-up-rim type, formed as silica dissolved in the water precipitates around the edge. J. E. Haynes, Yellowstone's official photographer, published the view, and Haynes Picture Shops made such park scenes familiar to early tourists.
