Purple bougainvillea arbor, Florida, circa 1940

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A large bougainvillea in full bloom, heavy with magenta-purple bracts, spills over a white lattice fence behind a red brick wall, with palms and other greenery at the left. The card's own caption calls it "An Arbor of Purple Bougainvillea in Florida." Bougainvillea, a South American vine, became a signature ornamental planting of Florida gardens and winter resorts in the early 20th century, and flowering specimens like this were a favorite postcard subject for tourists.
