About this postcard
The view looks up from beneath the Queensborough Bridge at its steel cantilever span, with a masonry anchorage at left and a small steam tug on the East River below. Across the water, the pale, multi-winged block of New York Hospital rises among lower brick tenements and industrial buildings. The bridge opened in 1909 and carried elevated railway trains on its upper deck. The caption notes that more than 50,000 automobiles, plus buses and rapid transit trains, crossed it on many days. It describes the hospital as part of a medical center with one of the most complete and modern hospitals and colleges in the world. New York Hospital, founded in 1771, had moved to its York Avenue buildings on the East River by the early 1930s.
