About this postcard
A sepia-toned view along a railroad right-of-way, with a row of small unpainted wooden buildings set behind a grassy, rutted clearing. Some of the shacks have porches and paling fences, and tall telegraph poles with crossarms rise overhead. A horse- or mule-drawn wagon stands near the buildings at left, a single figure in light clothing is visible at right, and a stand of pines closes the horizon. Trackside clusters of frame shacks were common in early-20th-century lumber, turpentine, and construction camps across the South. The scene fits the piney woods of East Texas, where such settlements served the region's timber and turpentine work.
