A tall, narrow waterfall drops through dense hardwood forest, its spray catching light between dark tree trunks — the view captioned "Rainbow Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park." Rainbow Falls, on the Little Pigeon River's West Prong near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, falls roughly 80 feet and is named for the rainbows often visible in its mist on sunny mornings. The surrounding forest is typical of the park's cove hardwood stands, established when the national park was created in the 1930s.
