Ranchotel garden and palm, San Luis Obispo, CA, circa 1943

About this postcard

The Ranchotel was a motor court on U.S. 101 at the north entrance to San Luis Obispo, California. Its garden court is shown with a tall palm rising over beds of red and pink flowers, white lawn furniture, and striped umbrellas set beneath shade trees. Mountains and a pastel sunset fill the background. Roadside lodges of the 1940s often used landscaped grounds and garden seating to appeal to auto tourists traveling the coast route between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The name and garden setting fit that motor-court style.
