Ranchotel garden and palm, San Luis Obispo, California, circa 1940

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A tall palm tree rises over a lawn of red and pink flowers, with white garden furniture and striped umbrellas set out beneath shade trees and mountains fading into a pastel sunset sky. The card names the site as the Ranchotel, on U.S. Highway 101 at the north entrance to San Luis Obispo, California, and carries the approval seal of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Such auto-camp and motor-court style hostelries flourished along the Pacific Coast highway in the 1930s and 1940s as motoring tourism grew.
