Red covered bridge, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, circa 1960

About this postcard

A long red wooden covered bridge with a shingled gable roof crosses a rocky stream in autumn. Bare and russet-leaved trees frame the structure against a clear blue sky, and a small horizontal window opening breaks the red siding near the white-boarded entrance. The printed greeting, "GREETINGS FROM THE PENNA. DUTCH COUNTRY," presents the scene as one of Pennsylvania's numerous picturesque covered bridges. Lancaster County and the surrounding Dutch Country are known for their surviving covered bridges, many built in the 19th century with timber trusses and roofed and sided to protect the wood from weather.
