About this postcard

A high-angle view down into the atrium of the Regency Hyatt House in Atlanta, with a glass elevator capsule climbing the central shaft. Balconies ring the open space, plants spill over the railings, and the lobby floor below holds tables, umbrellas, and a fan-shaped canopy. The hotel opened in 1967 as John Portman's Hyatt Regency Atlanta, and its open interior became the model for the atrium lobbies that American hotels copied for years afterward. The glass elevators were a signature of the design, carrying guests up through the hollow center rather than past closed doors in a corridor.
