About this postcard
Color view of the Rene Beauregard House at Chalmette, a two-story Greek Revival plantation house with a deep double gallery of white columns. Bare cypress trees frame the house, pink azaleas bloom in the foreground, and a hostess in a pink hoop-skirted period dress stands on the lawn. The printed caption calls it the Ante Bellum Rene Beauregard-Chalmette Visitor Center, New Orleans, La., and identifies the woman as a typical Little Colonel Hostess. The Little Colonels were Chalmette high school students who, with uniformed park personnel, greeted nearly half a million visitors a year; the caption notes that the club's 21 members had contributed over 16,000 hours of unpaid service. The house stands on Chalmette Battlefield, site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans, and served as the battlefield's visitor center.
