Riding Hall, Culver Military Academy, Culver, Indiana, circa 1940

About this postcard

A long red-brick, castle-like riding hall with crenellated parapets and twin towers flanking a great arched entrance, seen across a broad green lawn with a crowd of spectators and riders gathered at its base. The caption identifies it as the Riding Hall of the Culver Black Horse Troop at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. Culver Military Academy was founded in 1894 on the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee, and its Black Horse Troop, an equestrian unit in full dress uniform, became a familiar sight at presidential inaugurations and parades from the early 20th century onward.
