A narrow river of pale turquoise water winds through a steep, rocky gorge, with a road cut into the right bank and lined by short white guard posts that follow the curve of the stream. Massive, shadowed cliff walls of dark rock and scrubby vegetation rise on both sides, closing to a hazy, pastel sky in the distance. The scene is a classic American scenic-highway view of the mid-twentieth century, when such riverside roads were promoted as tourist routes through mountain canyons.
