About this postcard

A group of visitors, including a uniformed guide, descend a wooden stairway and bridge inside Great Onyx Cave. The route passes through a large chamber of rock formations, the kind of guided underground tour that drew tourists to Kentucky's cave country in the early twentieth century. Great Onyx was a privately operated show cave on Flint Ridge near Mammoth Cave, promoted as a rival to the better-known cavern. In the 1920s and 1930s, competing cave owners around Mammoth Cave relied on guided tours and printed views to attract motor tourists. The cave is now within Mammoth Cave National Park.
