About this postcard
The view looks along the Rivermont Bridge and the D Street Viaduct in Lynchburg, Virginia, with a yellow streetcar and pedestrians on the roadway and the city's hillside skyline of houses, church spires and a domed building rising behind. The long viaduct carries the street on a steel trestle over the low ground of the James River valley, while a second arched span crosses the scene behind it. Lynchburg, in the Virginia Piedmont on the James River, grew as a tobacco and railroad town whose steep bluffs and river crossings made elevated bridges like these a defining feature of its street plan.
