Road scene in Custer State Park, Black Hills, SD, circa 1930

About this postcard

A winding gravel road passes between towering red granite outcrops and dense stands of Black Hills pine. More pink-toned rock formations rise in the distance under a pale sky. The caption places the scene in Custer State Park, and the formations are the ones it calls "cathedral spires" and "chessmen," shapes that suggest kings, queens, bishops, and castles. Custer State Park was established in 1919 from the old Custer State Forest. The granite spires and the scenic drives built through them in the 1920s and 1930s, including the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road, made the park a destination for motorists.
