Road scene in Custer State Park, Black Hills, South Dakota, circa 1935

About this postcard

A winding gravel road passes between towering red granite outcrops and dense stands of Black Hills pine, with more pink-toned rock formations rising in the distance under a pale sky. The caption names the scene as a road in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The park, established in 1919 around the old Custer State Forest, is known for its granite spires and for the scenic drives — such as the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road — built through them in the 1920s and 1930s.
