Robert E. Lee portrait, Richmond, VA, circa 1950

Card type
Lithograph

About this postcard

A painted portrait of Robert E. Lee in later life: white hair, mustache and beard, a dark suit with a bow tie, and stars on the left chest. The background is dark and textured, leaving the face to carry the picture. Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War and afterward served as president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. The original painting belonged to the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, founded in 1831 and long a repository of portraits of Virginians. Cards of the painting served as keepsakes for visitors to the society's building.
