About this postcard

Bathers crowd the water and sandy beach at Rock Lake Swimming Pool, reached by Stop 12 on the St. Albans line near Charleston, West Virginia. A diving tower rises at the far end, a floating raft is packed with swimmers, and a long two-story bathhouse with a red roof stands at right; frame cottages and rocky bluffs line the far shore. The printed caption describes the pool as privately owned but open to the public and "one of Charleston's finest recreational assets," with thousands of summer patrons. Streetcar access made such pools practical summer destinations for city residents, and the promotional text presents Rock Lake as a public amenity even though it was privately run.
