About this postcard
The view looks up the Niagara Gorge at the dark, projecting mass of rock known as the Rock of Ages, with the rushing green-white water of the Niagara River below and spray and mist rising from the Cave of the Winds area behind it. The Rock of Ages was a famous promontory on the American side of the falls, and the Cave of the Winds — a cavern behind the Bridal Veil Falls — was a long-running tourist attraction reached by wooden walkways and stairs. Both were landmarks of the Niagara Reservation, New York's state park established in 1885 as one of the first such parks in the United States.
