About this postcard

An elevated view down a Manhattan avenue toward the Empire State Building, its Art Deco setbacks and spire rising above a street lined with high-rise offices and shops. The printed caption places the vantage point at Rockefeller Center, the midtown complex John D. Rockefeller Jr. began building in 1930, a Depression-era project that shifted the center of the city's business district northward. The Empire State Building, completed in 1931, was still the tallest building in the world and a favorite subject for New York view cards. Alfred Mainzer, a New York publisher of color views, issued this one in the chrome era, when Kodachrome-based color printing replaced the hand-tinted look of earlier cards.
