About this postcard

The view looks down a fenced dirt lane toward Rocks Bridge, a long timber covered bridge with red-brown siding and a shingled roof, crossing a broad, calm river at Haverhill. Bare spring trees frame the approach, and houses and a second iron truss span stand beyond the bridge. The caption identifies the crossing as Rocks Bridge at Haverhill, tying it to the city's Rocks Village area on the Merrimack River. Covered wooden bridges were common New England river crossings in the 19th century, their roofs and siding protecting the timber truss from weather; this one carries the rural approach road and railings of the period.
