The suspension bridge spans the Ohio River at Cincinnati, its stone towers and cables carrying the roadway toward Covington, Kentucky. A sternwheel steamboat passes beneath, and the city skyline, including a domed tower, rises along the far bank. Built between 1856 and 1867 to John A. Roebling's design, the bridge was a major early suspension span on the Ohio and a prototype for his later Brooklyn Bridge. The steamboat below points to Cincinnati's long role as a busy river port.
