Roper's Rock, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Tennessee, circa 1905

About this postcard

Roper's Rock rises as a tall bluff on Lookout Mountain above Chattanooga, with a steep wooden stairway climbing the hillside through leafy trees. A rail line curves along the lower right slope, and the sky carries a pink and blue sunset tint. The printed caption says the rock took its name from a Pennsylvania Regiment soldier who fell from it and was killed, and that the steps mark the path Union troops used to scale the mountain at this place. Lookout Mountain was the scene of a Civil War battle in 1863, and the rock and stairway became a local landmark for visitors.
