About this postcard
The Rose Window fills a rough stone wall of Mission San José, its carved tracery framed by scrollwork and topped with a small cross finial. The close view shows the deep relief of the Spanish colonial stonework, one of the best-known examples of mission-era carving in Texas. Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was founded in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesús and became the largest of the San Antonio missions. It was one of four Franciscan missions along the San Antonio River, and the church's ornamented stonework reflects the mission's prosperity in the 18th century. The site is now part of the San Antonio Missions, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
