Rosh Hashanah card, synagogue scenes, New York, NY, circa 1910

About this postcard
The card gathers Rosh Hashanah scenes: a crowded synagogue interior, men in prayer shawls blowing the shofar, worshippers entering a synagogue, a father blessing children by candlelight, and figures standing outdoors under a moon. The shofar blasts and the father's blessing carry the holiday's themes of repentance and family blessing. The Hebrew wish 'לשנה טובה' and the English 'A Happy New Year' accompany a Yiddish poem. Bilingual New Year cards were common in immigrant Jewish New York, pairing familiar synagogue and home rituals with a printed holiday greeting.
