About this postcard

A rough fieldstone tower with a rounded finial stands on a broad stone base among trees at Custer, South Dakota. The card identifies it as the Ross Monument, commemorating the discovery of gold in the Black Hills. That find is traditionally credited to Horatio N. Ross, a member of George Armstrong Custer's 1874 expedition, who found gold along French Creek. News of the strike helped set off the Black Hills gold rush.
