About this postcard

The Ross Monument stands as a tapered cairn of rough fieldstones on a broad stone base, its dark plaque facing a mown lawn with a dense stand of trees behind. A weathered wooden building shows at the left edge. The memorial commemorates Horatio N. Ross, a member of George Armstrong Custer's 1874 Black Hills expedition, who found gold in French Creek. That discovery helped set off the Black Hills gold rush and drew miners into the southern Black Hills.
