Route 21 from East River Mountain, Bluefield, WV, circa 1930

About this postcard

The view looks down Route 21 as it bends through a steep cut near the summit of East River Mountain, with white guard posts marking the curves. A green valley and distant hills open beyond the road. Bluefield, in the Appalachian coalfields near the Virginia line, was a railroad and coal center, and Route 21 carried travelers through that mountain border country.
