The view shows the Rowena Loops, a run of hairpin curves on the Columbia River Highway, cut into a rocky bluff above the Columbia River. The road follows the cliff edge behind a stone retaining wall and white guardrails, with the river and distant hills beyond. The loops were part of the early scenic highway that carried motorists up the steep grade west of The Dalles. The Columbia River Highway was among the first major scenic highways in the United States, and its engineers routed it to fit the basalt landscape.
