The Royal Exchange, with its dome and classical facade, rises behind a busy London street filled with horse-drawn omnibuses and pedestrians. Tall commercial buildings frame the scene, and the roadway and pavement are crowded with traffic.
In 1914 the Exchange still anchored the City's commercial district, a role it had held since the 16th century. Fred's note adds a travel story: he sails from Southampton on June 9 aboard the President Grant, a Hamburg American boat, and expects to reach New York on the 18th.
