About this postcard

The view looks through the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas River in Colorado, a narrow granite canyon near Cañon City, with a Denver & Rio Grande Western train on a ledge cut into the canyon wall above the water. Daylight trains through the gorge stopped ten minutes at Hanging Bridge so passengers could alight and see the chasm unobstructed. The railroad's route through the gorge was a celebrated engineering achievement of the late 1870s. A traveler named Martha called it "about the most beautiful spot on our journey."
