A view down First Street in Fort Myers, Florida, where rows of tall royal palms line both sides of a broad, brick-paved roadway. A single royal poinciana in red-orange bloom arches over the street at right, its canopy standing out against the palms. Fort Myers developed as a winter resort in the early 20th century, and palms and flowering tropical trees became part of its streetscape. The royal poinciana (Delonix regia) is a tropical ornamental known for its scarlet summer flowers.
