About this postcard

Brick columns and wall fragments of Old Sheldon Church stand roofless among trees and undergrowth, with the card's own caption placing the ruin between Beaufort and Walterboro, South Carolina. Built about 1751 as Prince William's Parish Church, it was burned by British forces in 1779, rebuilt in 1826, and burned again in 1865 during the Civil War, after which the shell was left standing as a ruin. The site, with its surrounding cemetery, is one of the best-known antebellum ruins in the South Carolina lowcountry.
