About this postcard
A rustic open-air pavilion or summer house of log construction, with a hipped roof of bark-covered poles, cross-braced log railing, and stone piers, stands on the crest of Washington Rock overlooking a hazy valley. The spot is Washington Rock in the Watchung range above Millburn, long associated by local tradition with George Washington's use of the heights as a lookout during the Revolutionary War; the surrounding heights became part of South Mountain Reservation. Such log shelters were typical early-20th-century park improvements offering visitors a shaded vantage point.
