About this postcard

The whaleback passenger steamer S.S. Christopher Columbus moves along the Milwaukee River past a row of brick wholesale and manufacturing blocks; signs for Metcalf Co. Shoe Makers and Smith, Thorne & Brown Grocers are legible on the facades. Built in 1892 at Superior, Wisconsin, the Christopher Columbus carried visitors at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and later ran excursion service between Milwaukee and Chicago. A smaller steam launch and a tug appear in the background, and the scene captures the commercial riverfront of early twentieth-century Milwaukee.
