About this postcard

A side-wheel-style excursion steamer, the S. S. Christopher Columbus, moves along the Milwaukee River past a row of brick wholesale and manufacturing blocks; signs for 'Metcalf Co. Shoe Makers' and 'Smith, Thorne & Brown Grocers' are legible on the facades. The Christopher Columbus was a whaleback passenger steamer built in 1892 at Superior, Wisconsin, and after carrying visitors at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition she ran excursion service between Milwaukee and Chicago. The view captures the commercial riverfront of early twentieth-century Milwaukee, with a smaller steam launch and a tug visible in the background.
