Port-side view of the four-masted, single-funnel steamship S.S. Haverford, her dark hull lettered "HAVERFORD." on the bow, riding open water under a blank sky. The sender's note, "Approaching the breakwater," places the ship at the Delaware Breakwater off Lewes, a harbor of refuge at the mouth of Delaware Bay. In the early 1900s, Lewes was a busy point for coastwise and transatlantic traffic seeking shelter behind the breakwater.
