Sailboat silhouetted at sunset in a harbor, 1939

Card type

About this postcard

A small single-masted sailboat with a furled sail floats in calm water, its mast and rigging silhouetted against a sunset sky of yellow, orange, and deep red. A low blue-grey shoreline with faint spires and rooftops stretches across the horizon, and a dark blocky structure, likely a lighthouse or pier building, stands at the right. The scene is painted in an impressionistic style with strong reflections in the water. The sender's note asks the recipient to pass the card along to a friend, a small trace of the everyday social use of postcards in the 1930s.
