Sailing ship in close call off Highland Light, Cape Cod, 1903

About this postcard

A black-and-white view shows a three-masted square-rigged ship heeling hard in heavy seas, with a lighthouse and low shoreline at right. The printed caption calls the scene "A close call off Highland Light, Cape Cod." Highland Light, the 1857 tower at Truro, Massachusetts, stands on the outer Cape, where shoals and open Atlantic weather made coastwise sailing dangerous. The ship is caught at the edge of that hazard, a common dramatic marine subject in the early twentieth century.
