Salt pool in Devil's Golf Course, Death Valley, CA, circa 1933

About this postcard

A small green pool sits in a white salt flat on Devil's Golf Course, with dark mineral crust and rough ridges spreading toward Telescope Peak in the distance. The surrounding beds are salt, not a thin surface crust; the card's text notes that a well here passed through more than a thousand feet of salt, broken only by thin layers of clay. The name comes from the jagged, pitted ground, which the card says only the Devil could use as a golf course. Death Valley National Monument, established in 1933, protected this stark corner of the desert.
