About this postcard
An aerial view across San Francisco Bay shows two new suspension bridges, the dense city grid of San Francisco in the foreground, and an island laid out with large exposition buildings and a tall tower. Hills and sky close the horizon. The view dates to the brief period when the Bay Bridge (opened 1936) and the Golden Gate Bridge (opened 1937) were both new, and Treasure Island was being prepared for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. The pairing of the spans with the fairgrounds reflects the Bay Area's rapid mid-1930s construction.
