About this postcard

Elevated view from San Francisco of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, with its suspension spans and a cantilever truss section reaching across the bay toward the East Bay hills. Small boats and a ferry leave wakes on the water. The bridge carried six automobile lanes on its upper deck and three truck lanes plus two interurban tracks on the lower deck. Its ship clearance was 200 to 218 feet, and the structure ran more than eight miles at a cost of $79 million. Completed in 1936, it linked San Francisco with Oakland and carried both road traffic and Key System trains across the bay, a major public work of the Depression era.
