About this postcard
A black-and-white view of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge at sunset, looking along the western suspension span toward Yerba Buena Island. Four steel towers and their X-braced portal frames recede across the water; dark trees frame the foreground at right and below, and the sky is cloud-streaked. The bridge opened in November 1936, linking San Francisco and Oakland by way of Yerba Buena Island. Its western span was built as two linked suspension bridges, with center spans of 2,310 feet, side spans of 1,160 feet, and ship clearance of 200 to 218 feet above low water.
