About this postcard

Julien C. Hyer's poem "San Jacinto" appears with a view of the San Jacinto Monument and a scene of Santa Anna's surrender to Gen. Sam Houston beneath a tree. The poem retells the April 21, 1836 battle, when Texan forces surprised the Mexican camp near the San Jacinto River, captured Santa Anna, and won independence for Texas. The 570-foot monument southeast of Houston commemorates the victory.
