SAN JACINTO By JULIEN C. HYER April 21, 1836 They were the answer to grim Goliad, The Phoenix from the pyre at Alamo, The single flickering hope the Texans had, The last thin line against advancing foe. "Stand and fight!" they resolutely shout, But Houston dares to brave their mounting wrath, Retreating, giving ground and feigning rout, He lures his enemy down a tortuous path. Men of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Adopted sons of this new Texas sod, Fall back through thickets where the dogwood tree Blooms by the river, called "The Arms of God." At last they find the Mexicans bivouacked, Where San Jacinto flows into the bay, Taking siestas, with their rifles stacked, Banners and battle flags in gay display. Houston's fighting plan is quickly revealed, Deaf Smith reports that Vince's bridge is out, "Twin-Sister" cannon train upon the field, The bugles sound, they storm this last redoubt. "Come to the Bower" is their battle song, "Remember the Alamo!" is their vengeful cry, The enemy wake to see a buckskin throng Sweep down to capture, slay and terrify. They bring an abject Santa Anna to The tree, 'neath which the wounded Houston lay; They set a Texas star in Freedom's blue, And born an empire new this April day. --- At San Jacinto, the Mexican General Santa Anna, was defeated and captured by Gen. Houston on April 21, 1836. The San Jacinto Memorial Shaft, 22 miles southeast of Houston, commemorates this victory and is the tallest of its kind in the world, being 570.4 feet high. 21868N Post Card PLACE STAMP HERE Natural Color Post Card Made in U.S.A. by E.
