About this postcard
Sunbathers and strollers in early-20th-century dress rest on the steep, grass-topped sand dunes of Plum Island, with the broad beach and the sea stretching away at left under a pale sunset sky. Plum Island is the long barrier island at the mouth of the Merrimack River, shared by the towns of Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley and Ipswich, and by the 1900s it was a popular summer resort reached by trolley and steamer from Newburyport. The dunes and the Parker River estuary later became part of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.
