Sand dunes covered with scrub and tufts of beach grass rise between clumps of green trees toward a strip of blue ocean and a pale horizon. The printed caption names the scene simply as the sand dunes of Ocean City, Maryland, the Worcester County resort on a barrier island where shifting sand and beach grass line the Atlantic front.
By the 1940s Ocean City was a well-established summer destination for Baltimore vacationers. The sender's note catches that mood: she is at the shore again, trying to get sunburned, and asks after friends and work people back home.

Dear Bessie,
Here I am again
at Ocean City and
is it swell. We are
trying to get sunburned
and need it bad.
How are work people
and everybody? I
guess a lot of them have
been away.
I'll see you eventually.
Love
Betty
